Local Walks
There are lots of beautiful walks to enjoy from Newton House, by simply crossing the road down to the mill or following the railway line from Sturminster Newton to Fiddleford and Shillingston. Whether its the River Stour, Hambledon Hill or one of the many National Trust gardens nearby that you are interested in; Dorset has a wealth of beautiful walks for everyone.
Several guides on local walks are available in the house.
Sturminster Newton Mill, with fully working machinery (within 100yds from the house).
Below are a few suggested walks for you to enjoy (without having to get in your car) when staying at Newton House.
Walk 1.
River Stour – Cut Mill – approximately 5 miles (look out for the yellow or blue arrows indicating public right of way).
This walk follows the fertile river valley, crosses the Stour at the remote Cut Mill and returns along an ancient lane. King fisher, Heron and an abundance of riverside wildlife can be seen. An otter has even been spotted early one morning on this walk!
Walk 2.
Fiddleford Mill (approximately 4 miles). The walk follows the river Stour to the south west of the town and returns along the old Somerset and Dorset railway line.
Walk 3.
Newton Mill – Colber Bridge – approx 2 miles
A short walk out of the house, across the water meadows down to Colber Bridge and back along Stalbridge Lane.
Simply ask Charlie or Margie for help or guidance for any one of these or other walks.
